CINEMAS TRANSCENDENTAIS​


Havana já ostentou a marca de ser a cidade do Ocidente com o maior número de cinemas em funcionamento, desbancando inclusive Paris e Nova York. Estima - se que eram 130 salas - algumas delas verdadeiras jóias do Art Decó - das quais 88 resistiram até a década de 1980, antes da crise que se instalou com o fim da União Soviética. Restam hoje apenas 21.

Embora o desaparecimento dos cinemas de rua seja um fenômeno global, os edifícios em Havana raramente foram substituídos por outros, dado que pela carência de meios decorrente do bloqueio norte americano ou pelo engessamento da economia, até recentemente não havia especulação imobiliária alguma na ilha. Muitos - sobretudo os menores - não existem mais, arruinados pela passagem do tempo. Outros, em estado precário, são utilizados em projetos culturais que esbarram na pouca disponibilidade financeira do Governo. Alguns dos maiores estão hoje sendo reformados e transformados em hotéis. Mas em Vedado alguns sobrevivem, sediando inclusive o Festival de Cinema de Havana, que completou 40 anos em 2018.

TRANSCENDENTAL CINEMAS
 

Havana once boasted the mark of being the city of the West with the largest number of cinemas in operation, surpassing Paris and New York. It is estimated that there were 130 rooms - some of them true Art Deco jewels - of which 88 resisted until the 1980s, before the crisis that settled with the end of the Soviet Union. Only 21 remain today.

Although the vanishing of the street cinemas is a global phenomenon, the  buildings in Havana have rarely been replaced by others, due to the lack of resources resulted from the North American embargo or given the collapse of the economy, until recently there was no real estate speculation on the island. Many cinemas - especially the smallest - do not exist anymore, ruined by the course of time. Others, in a precarious state, are used in cultural projects that meet government's lack of financial availability. Some of the biggest cinemas today have been renovated and turned into hotels. But in Vedado some still survive, even hosting the Havana Film Festival, which celebrated 40 years in 2018.
